Submission to the 2013 Murdoch Laing Housing Competition
Completed with Julia Chang -
This project was submitted to the 2013 Murdoch Laing housing competition hosted annually by the McGill University School of Architecture. The competition brief called for the design of a house for an undetermined site in the year 2063. Our competition entry, earning an honorable mention, envisions a restored memorial to a former apartment building in the city of Aleppo in Syria. The original building was partially destroyed in an airstrike in 2013. Our proposal presented a series of architectural interventions derived from the reconstructed narrative of the original occupants of the building. The physical reconstruction and chronicled deconstruction of their experience is approached through a series of material treatments that combine concrete and glass casting and and string of architectural interventions as scenographic tools to preserving and narrating the story of the original structure.
